Save The Day

This photograph is all about Southern California living and, in fact, I took it the first time I went to the beach after moving here.  But there is more going on here.  For one,  I love the pop of color from the lifeguard tube and wetsuit.  I am always on the lookout for complimentary and pleasing color combinations.  Also, it is certainly a minimalist photograph, but the negative space of the brilliant blue sky and wispy clouds speak volumes.  I captured this scene with my trusty 50 mm prime lens, considered a normal lens because it captures what the eye sees.  The scene was perfect and I saw no need to use a wide angle, generally under 50 mm or to use a telephoto lens, generally over 50 – 55 mm.  I boosted my ISO a bit and opened up my aperture a bit more as I was hand holding the camera and wanted more speed to prevent camera shaking.  Taken with Sony A7ii, Sony e- mount 50 mm, ISO 200 f/5.6 1/640 sec

Photography Tips:

Look for pleasing color combinations while you are out with your camera.  It is amazing what you find when your eyes are open to it.

Don’t be afraid to use negative space to help tell the story you want to tell.

If you have a 50 mm lens, they are usually fast and sharp and small enough to take just about anywhere.
